Practical Proposal pg. 1 corrected.

“A murder on the University of Houston campus has shaken students.  A homeless man was shot to death over the weekend while sleeping at a bus stop near Hofheinz Pavilion.” (ABC News)

I know what it is like to get emails every week stating that someone has been robbed, usually in the parking lots.   It is hard for students at the University of Houston to feel safe after dark around campus.  Many people state that it is because of the campus being open and allowing anyone to come in and out quickly, others because of the third ward surrounding the area of the university.  The fact of the matter is that security in and around the University of Houston-Main Campus needs some tuning.  It is quite obvious that security increases cannot be done from one day to another.  Costs must be evaluated and the measures to be taken must be decided after evaluating what the factors for these problems are.  It is hard to believe that as of February 09, the University of Houston had only 50 police officers and 24 security guards patrolling the 600-acre campus for more than 60,000 faculty, staff and students that roam the campus.  It is quite obvious that UH lack of security enforcement and lack of police officers to protect its students is present, one reads on proposals of security improvements to campus, like the “UH Walk in the Dark”, the SGA making proposals to the University that something must be done, emails highlighting the fact that evaluations are being done to improve the problems, yet after the past year of hearing and reading about measures being taken to improve, no changes are seen, One still gets emails of robberies and crimes inside of UH and the closely surrounding areas of campus.

UH must take more action in increasing security in main campus, with all ongoing improvements to programs and the prestige of U. Houston increasing.  It is imperative that security is not an issue people talk about when applying to this school; increased budgets must be revised and assigned a specific amount to the security department, proposals must be drawn and approved and more importantly, students must be aware of what measures are to be taken if it happens to you.

Causal Paper

The topic I have chosen for my causal paper intends to explain the main reasons on why New York City is the largest metropolis in the U.S.A.   The causal argument:  Does NYC’s location directly affect the fact it is the largest city in the Unites States of America?
The main topic in question is:
“Why is NYC, Economically speaking, the largest city in the United States of America?”

I’m taking a class in Economics in Urban Development and seeing as I am currently taking this subject specifically, I want to show why NYC is in fact, the largest city in America.   The main reason why I am choosing this, is because NYC is one of my favorite, most frequently visited and most intriguing cities in America, from my point of view at least.  It is also closely related to my major and minor here in the University of Houston; business and econ.  I’m still seeing what specific issues I could adress, but some idea so far, include showing the average living cost, to prove that the amount of money that moves in such a “small” area of land is fairly elevated compared to say, Houston or a small town in central US, although not getting into detail with other cities.  I would also like to show what the average payroll per employee in large industries is high and  although the cost is higher than most other cities, one might make more, but one also spends much more.  Also, the fact that NY’s location is key for imports and exports as its port is clearly superior.  Since early trade and immigration with the United States, NYC has been strategically placed for commerce with Europe.  These are some subjects I might address in my essay.  Any comments?

Visual Argument 1

“Glee” – noun – open delight or pleasure; exultant joy; exultation.

Being an International Student, one always sees movies from Hollywood portraying typical stereotypes from High Schools throughout the country.  After watching the Glee’s Pilot, I believe that several stereotypes are used but in a creative new catchy way to their targeted audience.  They are targeting viewers from shows like 90210, or The Hills maybe.  The creative part about it is, yeah it’s a comedy, but the adding in a sort of High School Musical into it, spices it up a bit.

Going back to the stereotypes though, The typical Jock who ends up realizing the real world isn’t bullying around the “nerds” or whom ever isn’t up to their “standards,” like in movies such as: “Not Another Teen Movie” (prank movie on all the typical jock and popular then meets girl who’s not), “American Pie,” (jock who joins singing).  The cheerleaders who believe that it is all about fame and popularity and how these “clubs” aren’t “cool.”  The Outcasts who want to become “somebody” in High School.   It also brings back classic “Grease” that people enjoy watching, it brings the vibe back in a modern, “hip” way.

I believe that the show is very creative personally, I do not watch these shows, but to their targeted audience, I get how this series is definitely one I would watch every week, or at least TIVO it.   The Media Market is constantly demanding new material for TV that is both innovative and will make them money, and this show definitely breaks grounds because it is nothing that has been seen before.  This show being an edgy, inspirational – if one could say -, and very different from most shows on air today, makes it a highly risky show to show on air because there is no predecessors.  That means they have no idea how the general public will react to this.  Most people probably will have a reaction similar to mine when they see the first part of the show; “Not my thing, I don’t like musicals.”  It reminded me of High School Musical or something like that I wouldn’t see.

After reading some critics, they expressed the fact that unlike the shows like “The Hills,” or “Gossip Girl” one can identify themselves to Glee because problems we see in Glee are those of a typical teenager in High School, fairly more common than problems than those in the shows, and that a connection as such, would generate ratings.  In my opinion, that doesn’t apply because most people who watch those TV shows, their targeted audience, watch the shows to disconnect from reality, to just enjoy the show and escape for that hour, hour and a half from school, work or what ever it is they look for.  I don’t mean that it won’t generate ratings at all through that side, but there would be other factors that would give them the ratings like the innovation of the show, and shady characters that are just funny.

Personally, I didn’t love the singing part, but I enjoyed the theme, it was pretty interesting because I hadn’t seen a show like that before.

Believer

Being a person with a lower education one is willing to get a job in any field ranging from fast food delivery all the way to construction somewhere very far away from what u might call home is.  A person with a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree or any type of higher education degree will be more biased into what type of job they are willing to get imply because the field of study in which they studied in closes various amounts of doors in the professional world.  Today, people with a BBA, are having a bad time searching for a job in corporate management even if they are top of their class.  Going back to the article, being someone without a lower education, one will find ways to begin some type of business be an entrepreneur in whatever field you are working at.  In Peru, there is a place called “Inversiones Angel” (direct translation: Angel Investments) and what this place does, is for someone with limited resources who has a good idea for a business — might even be the lawn mowing business the 18 year old kid from NJ — this place finances and gives the resources necessary for people with lower education (might even be less than high school, or none at all) to begin their own business legitimately. in conclusion, I believe that being successful and economically stable depends on the effort one puts into accomplishing one’s goals, aspirations and desires.

doubter

After reading William McGurn’s article on how college isn’t for everyone, It seems a bit biased towards not needing a college education.  Besides the fact that the journalist who wrote this article probably went to a very good school in the Northeast corridor of the US, he discusses the fact on how Mike Rowe, main character in his show “Dirty Jobs” explains how you do not need a college eduction to be successful.  At the same time, it might be true on a very small scale simply because without a college education it is very hard to advance and get promotions on your job.  Yes, he gives one example on how an 18 year old kid started mowing lawns and now owns his own small business that keeps growing, and explains that it grew thanks to courses he took at a college of higher education.  I disagree that only a High School diploma will take you to a successful career path due to the low supply of good jobs and high demand from people with a high school degree to a good paying job.  If nowadays, with the current economic collapse, it is hard for a person with a Masters Degree or even PHD’s in some cases to get a high paying, stable job.   How hard do you think it is for a person with only a High School education searching for a good paing, stable job?
