“A murder on the University of Houston campus has shaken students. A homeless man was shot to death over the weekend while sleeping at a bus stop near Hofheinz Pavilion.” (ABC News)
I know what it is like to get emails every week stating that someone has been robbed, usually in the parking lots. It is hard for students at the University of Houston to feel safe after dark around campus. Many people state that it is because of the campus being open and allowing anyone to come in and out quickly, others because of the third ward surrounding the area of the university. The fact of the matter is that security in and around the University of Houston-Main Campus needs some tuning. It is quite obvious that security increases cannot be done from one day to another. Costs must be evaluated and the measures to be taken must be decided after evaluating what the factors for these problems are. It is hard to believe that as of February 09, the University of Houston had only 50 police officers and 24 security guards patrolling the 600-acre campus for more than 60,000 faculty, staff and students that roam the campus. It is quite obvious that UH lack of security enforcement and lack of police officers to protect its students is present, one reads on proposals of security improvements to campus, like the “UH Walk in the Dark”, the SGA making proposals to the University that something must be done, emails highlighting the fact that evaluations are being done to improve the problems, yet after the past year of hearing and reading about measures being taken to improve, no changes are seen, One still gets emails of robberies and crimes inside of UH and the closely surrounding areas of campus.
UH must take more action in increasing security in main campus, with all ongoing improvements to programs and the prestige of U. Houston increasing. It is imperative that security is not an issue people talk about when applying to this school; increased budgets must be revised and assigned a specific amount to the security department, proposals must be drawn and approved and more importantly, students must be aware of what measures are to be taken if it happens to you.
